IFAM es uno de los principales fabricantes españoles de candados, cerraduras y dispositivos antirrobo para motos y bicicletas. Los productos se venden en más de 50 países de todo el mundo y la IFAM tiene filiales en Francia, el Reino Unido y Colombia. Con una red de distribución amplia y compleja, la gestión de las existencias y los envíos es una preocupación importante. El conocimiento crítico de la planificación fue controlado por un único director de planificación, con su propio método y sin visibilidad interorganizacional. Este enfoque condujo a errores de previsión que dieron lugar a la falta de existencias o a un inventario excesivo y obsoleto. Además, la IFAM se enfrentó a varios desafíos:
